What is Retinol for skin

What is a Retinoid?

Retinoids are a family Vitamin A derivatives and are compounds that are found naturally within the body for nutrition and general skin functions.

The word “Retinoid” has been used as a basic term for both over-the-counter retinol and prescription retinoids.

Retinoids are probably one of the most sought after anti-aging ingredients in the world.  It has the power to deliver noticeable results in the fight against wrinkles, fine lines and hyperpigmentation which is what has made it so highly desired.

Retinoids have been proven to improve skin’s texture and tone by increasing cell turnover and lightening dark spots.   There are various forms used for various purposes such as “tretinoin” used to help get rid of acne by unclogging pores and “tazarotene” used to treat psoriasis by calming inflammation and regulating skin cell growth.

The most powerful Retinoids are only available through a prescription.

What is Retinol?

This is a different type of Retinoid and available for use mainly in over-the-counter products as compared to prescriptions.  It is super effective but is different.  The main difference between Retinol and prescription retinoids is the strength.  Retinols contain a lower concentration of the active “retinoic acid”.  Therefore it works more gradually on the skin.  Some of the names used for these products on cosmetics are retinal palmitate, retinyl linoleate, retinyl acetate.

It takes more steps for these forms to convert into the active called retinoic acid, therefore the lesser strength.

These are generally more gentle on the skin than a prescription strength.

Don’t think however that they don’t work as they do.  It is just a more gradual process and in some cases less invasive.

What is Retinoic Acid?

This is what retinoids/retinols are coverted into when they enter the skin.  It is this form that the skin uses to increase cell turnover, stimulate collagen and elastin production, fade hyperpigmentation and help to keep the skin hydrated and glowing.

In addition to that it can help reduce large pores and even out the skin’s texture.

What are the side effects?

In skincare retinoids are usually synthetically derived and therefore are not permitted in organic certification.

The ingredient can often be difficult to formulate with due to its sensitively to light and PH.

The reported and known side effects of this ingredient can include redness, skin flaking, rashes and general irritation.

It is also advised that woman who are pregnant should not be using products containing this ingredient.

So, how do you reap the benefits of this potent ingredient but avoid the negative side effects.  Well there is an answer.

Alternatives?

Recently a lot of research has been conducted to look into a suitable alternative and one that truely delivers the benefits that a synthetic retinol can offer.

The one that we are highlighting here is Bakuchiol.  You may or may not have heard of this ingredient but it is currently creating a buzz in the beauty world and is the trending ingredient for natural and organic skincare.

Studies have shown that Bakuchiol causes an increase in the regulation and simulation of collagen within the skin.  It has been shown and proven that Bakuchiol significantly reduces the appearance of pigmentation and photo damage, and reduces post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.  It has been clinically demonstrated to visibly firm and plump the skin, soft fine lines and wrinkles just as efficiently as retinol.  Retinol has found its natural match!

Bakuchiol is 100% natural and is an oil derived from the seeds of Babachi plant.   Being natural it does not come with the usual side effects that traditional retinol has such as red, sensitive and irritated skin.  It is also safe to use during pregnancy.

How long does it take to see results?

Just like retinol it can take between 6-12 weeks to see skin benefits.  However, unlike retinol, it can be used by most skin types without irritation and can be used both morning and night.

Our natural Retinol Alternative serum uses Bakuchiol and a combination of exotic oils containing natural Vitamin A to help bring about the skin you have always wanted.  We call it the The Eternal Beauty Serum.

Stay strong, stay beautiful!
